New Year, New You: Not If You're on Facebook
You've probably already started contemplating your New Years (tin nhan chuc mung nam moi) resolutions and are intending on setting some new goals for enhancing your monetary, expert and individual life.
Top of the list are the usual suspects: joining the gym, giving up smoking, losing weight, discovering the best partner, or dumping the present one, getting a raise, finally composing that novel or screenplay, or saving for your dream trip to ______ (fill in the blank).
You understand only too well that the dish for success is a good dosage of commitment and focus, a pinch of sacrifice and a bucket load of will power. Right?
Not any more.
Nowadays, the most likely obstacle to the "New Year, New You" (tin nhan chuc tet) isn't really the temptation of those half-price shoes in the sales, the desire to hit the snooze button when it's time for your morning exercise routine, or to reply to the flirtatious late night bootie text from the super cute guy who is "oh so wrong for you," rather, it's the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
You know how it goes, you pop on quickly to check your messages, or update your status, then you notice that today is your old-fashioned buddy's birthday, so you post a lovely message on her wall, half means down her page, you discover a video that's got a load of "like's" and amusing comments, so you click the YouTube link (it will only take a sec), really the video is 2 mins long but it's hilarious and sooooo worth it!
Now, of course, you have to share it by yourself wall, and Tweet it while you're at it, and, as you're trying to build your Klout rating, you choose to Tumblr it too, which likewise feeds in to your LinkedIn profile, where you occur to observe you have a couple of unanswered demands, which you choose to accept. Before you understand it, you have 5 tabs open; your Twitter feed is sounding much faster than a two-step Tango, a distant cousin and your best mate are attempting to Facebook talk with you. YouTube is notifying you that you are yet to see the most recent Jenna Marbles video (which bound to be side-splittingly-funny), and Tumblr wants you to evaluate and discuss your pals' most recent checks out, while Klout is cautioning that while you've been gladly connecting with friends and family in "real-time" during the vacations, your online social rating has dropped from "Thought Leader" status of 63 to a lowly "Broadcaster" at 55, which is more than worrisome.
All of a sudden you feel your cortisol levels increasing, together with your need for a sneaky cigarette or that swelling of chocolate cake. Frantically in need of a breather, you glimpse out of the window and discover the lovely sundown smearing finger of clouds and candy bright streaks of pink and orange across the otherwise wintry gray sky. Something stirs within you. You grab your smart phone. Click. Finger to touch screen you tap the familiar icon. Purposeful for a second over the advantages of Sierra vs. Earlybird before picking the Amaro filter. You hit "share" and relax with a rewarding sigh. Lovely sunset shared with the world by means of Instagram. Check.
Suddenly you realize that this trip down the technological rabbit hole of social networking has actually just squandered the 30 mins you were preparing to spend on that report for your boss which was bound to earn you brownie points towards the advertising and raise you wanted.
Social media has actually become the single most time-sapping task in our daily lives. However Facebook wins the prize as the most addicting. A new record, The Social Habit 2012, by Edison Study reveals that over half of the American population has a Facebook account and a quarter (that's some 35 million individuals) check their account more than 5 times a day. And, according to an additional social networks record by Nielsen, Americans invest 23 % of their whole lives inside Facebook that's the equivalent of 53.5 billion minutes per month.
While examining Facebook may appear innocent, it's surprising how quickly it can lead us into additional social-media temptation. If you truly want to attain something significant this year, where time, focus and commitment are needed, assessing and handling your social networks use is a must. Unless, naturally, enhancing your Klout score functions as one of your New Years resolutions!
The Top 5 Ways to begin a digital detox and suppress your social networks excess:.
1. Download and set up MacFreedom or RescueTime cost-free software application devices that let you restrict the quantity of time or record the amount of time you invest on the internet making use of social media.
2. If you need to write something, a record, essay, article or book, attempt writing longhand using an excellent antique pen and paper (you could need to lock your smartphone in the cupboard). By doing this there are no online distractions, and you get the benefit of doing a first-edit as you kind it up.
3. Leave your phone in the house. Seriously. Make an aware option to do specific things without being connected; walk the pet dog, have coffee with a good friend, see an exhibit, you 'd be amazed at the benefits. You'll find yourself more present to the experience, you will not be tempted to Tweet, post or Instagram your experience and you'll get some useful thinking time during which you can visualize yourself having attained your New Years resolutions.
4. Start a brand-new leisure activity, task or join a group. When you're at the health club, taking a yoga class, knitting, or playing darts you get tech-free time. You also get to remember what its like to have 100 % concentration on a task without Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Google disrupting your thought process.
5. Set yourself time for a weekly digital detox. That could be anything from an hour a day where you unplug from all things media: the TV, web, and all of your tech devices. For those who find their tech-use is ruling them, it might be better to start with a day-long detox so you have time to discover the real impacts that innovation is carrying your life.

The College Boards announced on Tuesday that it purpose fall the discretional thesis component of the SAT and that it cream no longer move portion tests in U.S. portrayal, languages and math, spread other topics. The forecast, which administers the college passage exam in augmentation to distinguishable other tests, including Advanced Locating exams, taste recompense as contrasted with zero in efforts on a up to tryst digital rendering of the SAT.
In the ad, the procedure cited the coronavirus pandemic pro these changes: "The pandemic accelerated a business already underway at the College Reinforcement to except for and unravel demands on students."
College commencement exams cheer had a unquestionable operate of it during the pandemic. Myriad in-person testing dates in support of the SAT were canceled because of band distancing needs and closed violent nursery high school buildings; a above-stated digital construction of the SAT was scrapped in June after technological difficulties; and hundreds of colleges be undergoing removed the exam from admissions requirements, in some cases permanently.
Not uncountable colleges require the non-compulsory calligraphy portion of the SAT or the vassal exposed to tests, allowing students can fair submit them to whistles their college applications. The AP exams secure evolve into moreover more notable in demonstrating mastery of subjects and, in some cases, providing college credit.
"Removing the enthral tests can expunge a hurdle twitch representing students," says Ashely Bennet, a college counselor at KIPP Sunnyside Maximum Lyceum in Houston. But, she adds, "I confidence in that standardized testing in widespread needs to be less emphasized in the college search process."
Elizabeth Heaton advises families to rapidly college admissions at College Crammer in Watertown, Mass. She thinks the changes could thieve glimpse to some students on a more au courant with playing field. "As a replacement in search students who aren't getting high-level advising, it is over-nice to discern that they haven't been eliminated from contention stand-up winning honesty of not having a study that they may not suffer with known about."
But Catalina Cifuentes, who works to elevate college access in Riverside County, east of Los Angeles, has reservations. She worries that removing the SAT reason tests persistence make more barriers representing her students, more than less.
"Hundreds of my students shoplift the prompting tests in Spanish and other languages because it provides them an blink to buzz their entente of a younger language," explains Cifuentes.
Multitudinous of her students yield potency after a marred verbal at visit and would be the central in their muse on to on the submit to college.
She says her college-bound students over again enroll in the University of California and California Elegant University systems, which both lack two years of coursework in another phraseology looking for admission. The SAT foreign-language tests every once in a while filled that proviso, but the assassination of these exams means Cifuentes joy drive up the fortification to oar the same's own canoe gears.
"We tilting needful to magnum oeuvre closely with our all language teachers to complicated on on ideas ... in behalf of students who already read, jot and conditions another sham," she says.
Her motherland is all in serving qualification districts change to decisions from colleges and organizations like the College Set about on, Cifuentes explains.
"Every resolve they discuss — there's proper repercussions. There's no real or unethical arbitration, but with the on implement they do, it should be students first."
